Texture As A Decorative Element
It should be remembered that decorating is not just about the visuals - colors, designs, patterns. A complete makeover work includes texture - the feel of things in a room. Satin and cotton for instance, top bills the most pleasurable to touch. To touch an object that feels good heightens our sensory awareness and makes living in a place a more positive experience.
If you look around a room you'll notice that there are various materials, from the couch, table and chairs to the shelf and even small knick-knacks around. These materials not only differ in appearance but in texture too. Wood is different from metal, glass from steel and bamboo from marble. Metal for example has such a smooth feel that although varnished wood has a similar texture, wood doesn't match up to the smoothness of metal. Similarly, metal is no match to the variety in looks of wood, with the latter's naturally varying colors.
Fiber of course is a texture winner. There are different kinds of materials, all offering something for the senses. When we lay our heads on a soft pillow or feel the smoothness of an armchair's cushion, it's not just about these things looking good but feeling good too.
Satin has a perfectly smooth texture which slides away under your fingers, giving you a feeling of intense luxury. Satin is a way of weaving fibers, rather than a type of fiber in itself, so you can get cotton satin, which will last rather longer than silk satin, a much more delicate fabric. A normal weave fabric made of silk won't feel the same as a normal weave cotton fabric. Although the texture is very similar, the silk might be stiffer or softer, depending on the type of silk and how it was treated prior to weaving.
You can also bring texture into a room with a carefully chosen area rug. In a room full of smooth textures, such as metal and satin, a thick fluffy rug will provide an excellent contrast, not to mention a focal point for bare feet in the winter. On the other hand, a smooth rug in a room full of contrasting textures will carry on the theme of different textures, even across the floor. Don't forget that an area rug can be made with a variety of different textures, so that a well-thought out rug can bring together various themes and textures present in a room.
It would be unfortunate to go about without the feel of things. I know I would be missing a lot. In decorating, don't just focus on the looks. Pay attention to the "feelings" too.
