When the majority of people give thought to sci-fi films, 99% will think about Star Wars. That series transformed the way in which everybody viewed films, not to mention sci-fi films. Before George Lucas, many people neglected this genre. It had a history of being made of B motion pictures with goofy story lines and unrealistic special effects. But after Star Wars, that changed.

Strangely enough the additional major smash hit that year was a nuclear apocalypse film called Damnation Alley which was fairly seminal for its occasion. However when you compared the special effects, script and just the overall motion picture to the original Star Wars it is difficult to recognise or believe where 20th Century Fox spent $17 million dollars - Star Wars looks like it cost about $170 million in comparison. There were a variety of factors behind Damnation Alley appearing so bad in comparison and a lot of the damage was done post-production - ain't that always what happens?

But back to Star Wars before I totally wander away from the topic. There were hardly any movies in the history of cinema that have had this type of deep and long lasting effect on the entertainment field. Even think about the merchandising that followed the release of the movies - it took this element of film advertising and company revenue to a completely new level.

And one of the biggest marketing hits were the lightsabers that entered the market to meet the requirement from children all over for their own replica lightsaber. The initial attempts were pretty weak but after a lot of assessing and fine-tuning Master Replicas finally got it correct once they mastered the Force FX lightsabers and the bargain knock-offs died a quick death.

But just what made the lightsaber such a well-known toy? There was clearly numerous other Star Wars toys to pick from after all. Lucas even capitalized on this by making the Jedi an order of knights. The lightsaber took the sword to a totally new stage and gave it a whole new lease on life in the movies.

The coolness factor of the lightsaber and what distinguished it from any other sci-fi weapon we'd experienced before was that by using the Force the lightsaber evolved into an extension of you - you and the weapon become joined; which needless to say has leanings towards the stories around Samurai warriors. It took proficiency to employ a lightsaber and in a way you almost had to be born to wield one with any sort of expert ability.

There has been no weapon since, in any sci-fi movie that I can find, that's come near to the lightsaber in terms of producing sheer amazement in an audience.
